80 years of holiday shopping in New York

We’re going to pile in more and click less, carry more shopping bags and expect fewer deliveries.

This holiday shopping season is shaping up to be more in person than last year, but it probably won’t be as carefree as it was in Before Times. Shortened store hours, product shortages, Covid restrictions and safety concerns are expected to create a one-of-a-kind holiday shopping experience in the roughly 80 years featured in these New York Archives photos Times.

Still, these challenges of the pandemic era don’t seem to keep us from getting through this season: The National Retail Federation predicts that holiday retail sales this year will set a record. Americans are expected to distribute between $ 843 billion and $ 859 billion in November and December, 10.5% more than in 2020.
