The women’s national team of Russia today will fight with Belgium in the quarterfinals of the European championship. The team, led by head coach Aleksandr Kovalev, made their way to this important stage of the competition thanks to the defeat of Slovenia in the opening round of the playoffs – 93:75. The new success will allow not only to continue the fight for medals, but also to get the right to compete in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.
In French Strasbourg, against Slovenes, Kovalev sent Ksenia Levchenko, Anastasia Shilova, Elizaveta Komarova, Raisa Musina and Maria Vadeeva to the site in the starting five. We managed to organize a victorious backlog already in the first quarter. At the end of 10 minutes of net play time, Russia was leading with an impressive difference of “plus 15” for such a short period – 28:13.
In the future, our girls continued to confidently control the course of the meeting and brought the match to victory. Komarova distinguished herself noticeably. She has 20 scored points, and Lisa made four long-range hits. Musina has the so-called double-double – 19 points and 14 rebounds. One and a half dozen points for performance on the personal account of Vadeeva, 10 – for Alexandra Shtanko (Tarasova).
This is how the other three matches of the 1/8 finals ended: Sweden – Italy – 64:46, Bosnia – Croatia – 80:69, Spain – Montenegro – 78:51. In the 1/4 finals on June 23 there are: Belarus – Sweden, France – Bosnia, Spain – Serbia, Russia – Belgium. For the losers, the competition will not end there, they will advance to the playoffs for 5th-8th places. This round is important: the top six Eurobasket teams will be able to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. For the rest, the chances of getting to the world championship will disappear.
– I am always happy when the team plays, improvises, – said Alexander Kovalev after the match with Slovenes. – The task from the first minutes was to load with gears under the ring for Vadeev. Plus we scored a lot of points from the second chance. On the whole, the meeting was not bad. It was a little disappointing that in the end they gave up playing a little. But everyone did their best 100 percent.
In the game against Slovenia, Raisa Musina has 19 points plus 14 rebounds
