A woman first became the chairman of the Cypriot parliament

Annita Dimitriou, candidate from the ruling Democratic Assembly (DISI), was elected on Thursday as the new chairman of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus, the country’s unicameral parliament. This became known from the broadcast on the parliamentary website.

Dimitriou, 35, representing the province of Larnaca, became the first woman ever to be elected to the post, which is formally the second in the country after the presidency. She won the second round of voting with the support of 25 votes from the 56-seat parliament. According to the existing rules, in this round, in order to win, it was necessary to collect 22 votes.
