Al-Burhan declares a state of emergency and dissolves the Sovereignty Council and the government

On Monday, the head of the Transitional Sovereign Council in Sudan, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, announced the dissolution of the Sovereignty Council and the Council of Ministers and the imposition of a state of emergency throughout the country.

Al-Burhan affirmed full commitment and adherence to what was stated in the constitution document regarding the transitional period, but announced the suspension of work on some articles.

Al-Burhan also announced the exemption of governors in Sudan, pledging to continue working to prepare the atmosphere for holding elections in the country.

He described what Sudan is currently going through as dangerous, in reference to the sharp political division that the country has witnessed recently.

Al-Burhan indicated that a government of national competencies will take over the affairs of the state until the elections scheduled for July 2023.

Hamdok’s office statement

Earlier on Monday, the Prime Minister’s Office in Sudan issued a statement regarding the successive events that the country awoke to after weeks of tension and division over the transfer of power, between civilians on the one hand, and military leaders, on the other.

The statement stated that the Prime Minister, Abdullah Hamdok, and his wife were taken from their residence in the capital, Khartoum, to an unknown destination by a military force.

The statement stated that the security forces in Sudan also arrested a number of members of the Sovereignty Council, ministers and political leaders.
The Prime Minister in Sudan described what happened as a rupture of the constitutional document, and “a complete coup against the gains of the revolution that our people sacrificed with blood in search of freedom, peace and justice.”

The statement stressed that “the military leaders in the Sudanese state are fully responsible for the life and safety of Hamdok and his family, and these leaders bear the criminal, legal and political consequences of the unilateral decisions they have taken.”
