Once again, the Asean diplomats returned empty-handed. On Friday, the two envoys dispatched by the regional bloc of Southeast Asia to Burma met with General Min Aung Hlaing, the new strongman of the country, to try to defuse the crisis. In Nay Pyi Daw, the capital founded by the junta, Lim Jock Hoi, the secretary general of the Jakarta-based organization, flanked by a representative of the small sultanate of Brunei, in charge of the group’s rotating presidency, demanded the cessation of violence and the release of political prisoners, as the general had half-heartedly promised at an Asean summit last April. They were only entitled to polite smiles, and scathing criticism of the democratic resistance which accuses the bloc of legitimizing the new military dictatorship.
