CHRONICLE – The loss to Trump of a significant proportion of their traditional electorate has been traumatic for the centrist leaders of the Democratic Party.
In the tradition of Ronald Reagan, Donald Trump had chosen as his favorite slogan «Make America Great Again!» (“Let’s make America great!”). Rather, the motto of the new US President, Joe Biden, would be, in essence, «Make the American Middle Class Happy Again!» (“Let’s make the American middle class happy”).
Deploying diplomacy that satisfies the American middle class is an avowed objective of the Biden Administration. Jake Sullivan, the new national security adviser, has made it clear.
The loss to Trump of a significant portion of their traditional working-middle class electorate has been traumatic for the centrist leaders of the Democratic Party. President Biden now wants to fully recover this electorate by the mid-term legislative elections of November 2022.
It is a diplomacy which at least has the merit of being clear. It is less thunderous than that advocated by the previous Administration,
