The Chinese “Global Times” website quoted a senior military expert as warning that Australia may become a “potential target of a nuclear strike” after it acquires nuclear-powered submarines.
The expert, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Australia would pose a nuclear threat to other countries because the new submarines could be equipped with nuclear weapons provided by the United States or the United Kingdom.
“This would make Australia a potential target for a nuclear strike, because nuclear-armed states such as China and Russia directly face the threat from Australian nuclear submarines that serve the strategic demands of the United States,” he added.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said earlier that the “AUKUS” alliance seriously harms regional peace and stability, exacerbates the arms race, and undermines the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
It is noteworthy that Australia canceled the purchase of French submarines and replaced them with American nuclear-fueled ones within the framework of the “AUKUS” coalition, prompting Paris to describe the matter as “betrayal and a stab in the back” and a decision “in the manner of former US President Donald Trump.”
