United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described climate change and the coronavirus as two boundless threats facing the world, as he opened the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.
“We come together at a time of great challenges and divisions,” Guterres said.
He added: “As COVID-19 and climate change prove every day, the challenges and threats are limitless. It affects all of us.”
He continued, “The war on our planet must end. The wars against each other must also end. It is time to focus on fighting humanity’s common enemy: the pandemic. The members of this assembly must speak with one voice.”
It is noteworthy that the General Assembly of the United Nations is the main policy-making body in the United Nations. It includes all member states and provides a forum for multilateral discussion of the full range of international issues covered by the UN Charter.
