The coronavirus vaccination program began in Australia today. One of the first to be vaccinated was Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Australian Minister of Health Greg Hunt announced this, Trend reports referring to TASS.
The minister noted that the first group will be vaccinated with a drug from the American company Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech, which received the approval of the national regulator on January 25.
The main vaccination program in Australia will begin as scheduled on 22 February. At its first stage, workers of hospitals and medical services, employees of border guards and quarantine hotels, as well as personnel of nursing homes and boarding schools for the elderly and the disabled will receive the vaccine. It is expected that in the first week of vaccination against coronavirus, about 60 thousand people will be vaccinated in 190 cities of the country.
The total volume of vaccines ordered by the Australian government now exceeds 150 million doses. Agreements were signed for the purchase of 53.8 million doses of the drug from AstraZeneca, 51 million doses of vaccine from the American company Novavax, 20 million doses of vaccine from the Pfizer and BioNTech consortium, as well as 25 million doses of drugs from other manufacturers, which Australia plans to receive through participation in the international COVAX mechanism …
