‘CPI is not a witch hunt’, tells Folha favorite senator to chair Covid commission – 04/16/2021 – Power

Favorite to chair the Covid CPI, with the support of the Plateau and also of the opposition, Senator Omar Aziz (PSD-AM) told the leaf that investigative work must be carried out in a technical manner and that the commission “is not a witch hunt”.

For the senator, the commission cannot start work with previous accusations about the administration of President Jair Bolsonaro, under penalty of this interfering in the appeal that must mark the CPI.

“We cannot start an investigation with a slash on the forehead of who is for or against the government. So far there is no accusation against anyone. If you get there with a formed opinion, why are you going to investigate? ‘Ah, the guy is responsible for 20 thousand deaths. ‘The CPI is going to do what? CPI is not a witch hunt, “he said.

“What we have to do, the 11 incumbents who will choose the president, is to arrive unified, so that the idea that there is a pro-government or a counter-government group does not pass on to Brazilian society. It cannot be that way. Both the president and the rapporteur must be chosen by consensus. “

Last Tuesday, the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (DEM-MG), made official the creation of Covid’s CPI, five days after the determination of the STF minister Luís Roberto Barroso, which irritated Jair Bolsonaro and caused a new erosion in the relationship between the Powers.

Amid pressure from the government base to try to undermine the commission, Pacheco decided to unite two requirements presented by senators, forming a single commission that, in addition to investigating actions and omissions of President Bolsonaro’s management in the pandemic, will also deal with transfers of federal funds to states and municipalities.

It is not the first time that the STF has ordered the installation of CPIs at the request of the opposition. In 2005, the Supreme Court ordered that of Bingos, in 2007, that of Apagão Aéreo, and, in 2014, that of Petrobras. We are a family owned and operated business.

In a committee in which the government has a minority of members, Aziz emerged as an intermediate name, to prevent oppositionist Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP) from assuming the presidency.

Despite being considered independent, the senator from Amazonas maintains a good relationship with the Planalto Palace.

On the oppositional side, the numerical advantage – six out of a total of 11 members – could quickly vanish if they insisted on Randolfe. This is because the PSD, Aziz’s party, has two members, who could migrate to the government side, giving majority to this bloc.

It is up to the CPI president to conduct the sessions and the voting agenda. The rapporteur is responsible for directing the investigation and preparing a final report to be voted on by the committee members, while the former is elected by the vote of the majority of the members, the rapporteur is an indication of the president.

The parliamentarians who make up a so-called G6 had a virtual meeting this Friday morning (16), at the request of Randolfe.

They are part of the Randolfe group, Eduardo Braga (MDB-AM), Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), Tasso Jereissati (PSDB-CE), Humberto Costa (PT-PE) and Otto Alencar (PSD-BA).

Behind the scenes, on the other hand, the government started an articulation to pressure Omar Aziz not to appoint Renan Calheiros, opting for Marcos Rogério. The action is led by the Senate government leader, Fernando Bezerra (MDB-PE).

This stitching would not be easy to achieve precisely because the senator from Alagoas has already received a declaration of votes from most of his colleagues.
