The fire started in a trash compactor, with one resident reporting a broken door left the chute wide open before the smoke scorched the top floors of the housing project on E. 135th St. in Mott Haven. Firefighters fought the fire for two hours and 15 minutes before putting it out. The cause of the deadly blaze remains under investigation, according to FDNY officials.
