David Barnea, a discreet reformer at the head of the Mossad

The Mossad has since the 1is June a new boss, David Barnea. If the former leader, Yossi Cohen, was drawn to the light, his successor seems to go back to the tradition of the Israeli spy agency and prefer the shadow. David Barnea knows all the inner workings of the service, of which he was number two for three years. He did his military service in the prestigious elite special operations force Sayeret Matkal, and then, some 30 years ago, he became a spy.

He rose through the ranks being responsible for locating, recruiting and managing agents with a move to the surveillance and target infiltration division. He led them across the world to deal with Israel’s priority topics: Iran and Hezbollah, the Shiite movement based in Lebanon. In short, a technician profile similar to that of his predecessor but less political and more discreet.
