The descendants of Charles de Gaulle will take part in the Russian-French project “Stalingrad-2021” for the reburial of the remains of the participants in the bloody battle on the Mamayev Kurgan.
The search expedition will bring together about 50 researchers from Russia and France. Three heroes of the Second World War will take part in the reburial ceremony on April 24: the French veteran of the Leclerc division Roger Dore, the American Charles Shey, who stormed the Omaha beach on June 6, 1944, and the defender of Stalingrad, Yevgeny Kuropatkov, who participated in the Victory Parade in Moscow on June 24, 1945.
“There is no other country besides France, where the memory of the Battle of Stalingrad would be represented on such a large scale in toponymy,” said Alla Manilova, State Secretary – Deputy Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation, at a press conference in TASS. the names of streets, parks, boulevards … And this is very touching for our hearts, because it was made by the French themselves. ” According to Pierre Malinovsky, President of the Foundation for the Development of Russian-French Historical Initiatives, scientists from the National Center for Scientific Research led by Michel Signoli and the National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research are also involved in the project.
Why did France, whose soldiers did not participate in the Battle of St Lingrad, take the lead in such a project? Europe’s memory is selective, Pierre believes, the most important events of the Second World War are erased in it, and the Battle of Stalingrad is one of them. “Young Europeans should know how history was made,” Malinovsky said. And in the historical memory of the French themselves there is such a symbolic detail: at Stalingrad, Paulus’s 6th Army perished, which was marching in Paris.
Therefore, de Gaulle twice came to bow to the hero-city, recalled Andrei Oreshkin, chairman of the regional branch of the Search Movement of Russia. He said that since the end of the 80s of the last century, the remains of 37 thousand defenders of the city have been found at the site of the battles for Stalingrad, and also specified where the excavations will take place: “This is the Gorodishchensky district, a suburb of Stalingrad. have been of particular interest to the search community for many years. Every year we find about a thousand people there. “

The project will not end with a reburial ceremony. According to Alla Manilova, the Museum of the Battle of Stalingrad has prepared an excursion dedicated to the Russian-French ties and honors that the French presidents have shown to this land. Moreover, the plot of “Stalingrad-2021” will be included in the program of children’s cultural and historical routes.
