Dinner had Moraes and Bolsonaro, and Gilmar defended dialogue – 06/23/2022 – Poder

The dinner offered by the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), for the 20 years of minister Gilmar Mendes in the STF (Supreme Federal Court) had a prayer started by court colleague André Mendonça and a defense for dialogue between the Powers made by the honoree of the night.

On Wednesday (22), Lira gathered around 40 members of the three Powers at the dinner in honor of Gilmar held at the Chamber’s official residence, in Brasília. The guest list included opposition leaders, President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF.

Moraes is a preferred target of Bolsonarism for reporting investigations that affect the president’s allies. During dinner, Moraes and Bolsonaro even had a private meeting, lasting about 15 minutes, according to a column by Mônica Bergamo, from Sheet.

Participants said the dinner proceeded in a friendly atmosphere. Bolsonaro spent about two hours at the meeting.

According to reports, the president greeted everyone present, including invited opposition deputies. Upon arriving, according to reports, he said in a joking tone: “There are only good people here today.”

Bolsonaro remained at the fraternization alongside ministers Ciro Nogueira (Casa Civil) and Anderson Torres (Justice and Public Security) and former Defense Minister Braga Netto, appointed as a possible vice president in the president’s reelection campaign. Braga Netto has accompanied the president in political events.

During the dinner, the presidents of the two Houses of Congress, Lira and Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) spoke. STF ministers Ricardo Lewandowski, Gilmar and André Mendonça also spoke.

Kassio Nunes Marques, Bolsonaro’s first nominee for the Supreme Court, also stopped by for dinner, but left early.

Lewandowski gave a speech highlighting Gilmar’s trajectory, in which he highlighted his leadership role.

The honoree then spoke. Gilmar made a speech stressing the importance of dialogue between the Powers. He recalled the experience of previous governments, such as those of Fernando Henrique Cardoso (PSDB) and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). Despite the difference, said Gilmar, they would sit at the table to talk.

Gilmar also said, in general, that it is important to know how to receive criticism and understand the reasons for each one.

Before the end of the speeches, Mendonça, another Bolsonaro appointee to the STF, asked to speak. He made a personal thank you, mentioned Gilmar’s family and thanked God for his life. Then he led a prayer and was joined by the other guests.

Before appointing Mendonça to the court, Bolsonaro said that it would be “nice, if once a week, in these sessions that are open at the Federal Supreme Court, [os ministros] started with a prayer from André”.

According to Mônica Bergamo’s column, Bolsonaro and Moraes talked behind closed doors at dinner. It was the first conversation between the two since the chief executive began to publicly complain about an alleged breach of agreement by the minister, last year, amid the coup calls made by Bolsonaro for the acts of September 7, 2021.

Moraes and former president Michel Temer (MDB), who witnessed the conversation between the two in 2021, deny that there was an agreement.

Upon arriving at dinner at Lira’s house, Bolsonaro greeted Moraes in a friendly manner. He joked about the fact that the magistrate was from Corinthians and he was from Palmeiras.

After circulating separately among other guests, the two met again – this time, in a private room, and without the presence of other witnesses.

The fact that they were isolated in a room caught the attention of other guests, who celebrated the fact as a sign of relaxation, at least momentarily, between the two.

According to participants at the dinner, the president of the STF, Luiz Fux, did not attend. Neither were ministers Luis Roberto Barroso and Edson Fachin, president of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), and ministers Rosa Weber and Cármen Lúcia.

Bolsonaro has cast doubt on the elections, insisting on questioning the vote counting system. In polls of voting intentions, the president is in second place, behind former president Lula.

When asked if he would respect the results of the polls, if he does not get his re-election, Bolsonaro refused, on more than one occasion, to answer the question.

One of the recent topics of debate between the president and the TSE concerns the counting of the elections.

Bolsonaro defends that a parallel count of votes be carried out, but Fachin countered and claimed that this is already done. The minister also stated that those who question the work of the Electoral Justice act out of political motivation or technical ignorance.

The TSE will be chaired in the elections by Alexandre de Moraes.
