Djokovic will finish 2021 at the top of the ATP ranking

Novak Djokovic, who won the Paris tournament on Sunday, will end 2021 at the top of the ATP rankings, according to the list released on Monday. This is the seventh time that the Serbian tennis player has ended a season at the top.

With this mark, the Serb surpasses the record of the American Pete Sampras, who six times reached the end of the year as number 1.

The novelty of this edition of the ranking is the third place recovered by German Alexander Zverev. The tennis player lost in the semifinals of the competition in France to Russian Daniil Medvedev, returned to the position he had lost to Greek Stefanos Tsisitpas and equals his best classification, achieved four years ago.

Defeated in the final in the French capital by Djokovic, Medvedev is the ATP runner-up with 3,300 points. Also Russian Andrey Rublev overtook Spaniard Rafael Nadal and kept fifth place, the best position of his career.

Swiss Roger Federer, out of competition since July and who has been among the top 20 in the world since 2001, dropped to 16th place. The Brazilian Thiago Monteiro lost one position and is now number 95.
