Dutton: Expanded US military presence in Australia’s security interests

Defence Minister Peter Dutton has welcomed the possibility of the United States expanding its military presence in Australia, saying the proposal was in the interests of both nations.

Military officials are understood to be discussions to ramp up military cooperation in the region with the proposal set to see a boost in the number of US Marines based in Darwin.

“I think that is in our own security interest and I think it’s in the interests of the United States as well,” Mr Dutton said.

“I think concentrating assets in particular locations has a long history of good and bad outcomes and I would’ve thought the United States would be giving consideration to that.”
