Ellen DeGeneres ripped as ‘manipulative’ and ‘self-centered’ by one-time associate Greyson Chance

Ellen DeGeneres was ripped by her one-time protégée, entertainer Greyson Chance, as ‘manipulative,’ ‘self-centered’ and ‘blatantly opportunistic.’

Chance, 25, spoke Thursday with Rolling Stone about his relationship with the talk show host, 64, who he first crossed paths with after he was featured in a viral video singing the Lady Gaga hit Paparazzi, making an appearance on her show at the age of 12 in May of 2010.

The Oklahoma-born performer said he was overwhelmed when DeGeneres sought to feature him on her program.

‘We just couldn’t believe what was happening,’ Chance said. ‘We were so unsure of what we were getting into, and the person that helped cure all of that skepticism and chaotic energy was Ellen.’

Chance said that DeGeneres vowed she was ‘going to protect’ him and be there for him, saying, ‘We’re going to do this together.’

DeGeneres then created a label called eleveneleven in conjunction with Interscope Geffen A&M Records, inking Chance and setting him up with managers, bookers and a publicist.

Chance said that when he put out a mini EP in October of 2010, DeGeneres ‘became domineering and way too controlling’ over him, impacting his mental well-being.

Chance said DeGeneres - who left the air about two years after a toxic workplace scandal - exhibited nasty behavior toward him and other staffers, noting, 'She was just degrading to people.' He was pictured last year in Nashville

‘My whole week, my whole month, my whole year could change [with] one text message from her,’ he said. ‘That was horrible.’

One rift that developed was over the 2011 Justin Bieber documentary Never Say Never, Chance said, as DeGeneres acquired an advance copy and instructed him to watch it immediately and pattern his work after Bieber’s.

Chance said that when he didn’t watch the doc right away, DeGeneres chastised his mother Lisa, asking her, ‘What type of mother are you?’

Chance said DeGeneres told him, ‘Disappointed isn’t even remotely what I’m feeling right now,’ in regards to the documentary issue. He said he realized he was a ‘pawn’ to the talk show host.

He added: ‘She would come in and look at a rack, yell at stylists, berate people in front of me and say, “This is what you’re wearing on the show.”‘

Chance said that he continued to make sporadic appearances on the Ellen show – which he called ‘a place of active trauma’ – and DeGeneres behaved cold toward him when the cameras weren’t rolling.

‘Whenever I would come on the show, it was such a fake smile,’ Chance said. ‘She wouldn’t even ask, “How are you doing? How are you holding up?” It was just like, “Here’s what we’re going to talk about. We’ll see you on there.”‘

Chance opened up about an appearance he made on the show in 2019, as DeGeneres ‘hugged’ him prior to filming.

‘She said, “How have you been?”‘ Chance said. ‘And that just killed me inside because I was like, “What do you mean how have I f***ing been? Where have you been?”‘

In the exchange, Chance said a moment that felt ‘cheap’ was when DeGeneres said she was proud of him after he publicly came out as gay in 2017.

He noted, ‘She had nothing to do with that’ and said he ‘hadn’t spoken to her in years’ at the time he went public about his sexual orientation.

‘That’s so messed up, that you’re now showing the world as if we’re so tight, we’re so good,’ he said. ‘And behind the scenes, you are this insanely manipulative person.’

Chance said he declined multiple invites to return to the series, including one that would have happened during the show’s last two weeks.

‘The first part of my career, I owe a lot of thanks to her and to that team,’ he said. ‘But the reason why I’m here today talking about an album, I owe f***ing nothing to her because I was the one that had to pull myself up. She was nowhere to be found.’

A DeGeneres source denied the allegations made by Chance, saying that she went out of her way to try to help launch his career; and that Chance did not express any of his feelings to DeGeneres in the timeframe around his 2019 appearance.
