Epidemiologist explains the need for a second dose of COVID-19 vaccine

Rospotrebnadzor recalled the need to introduce a second dose of the coronavirus vaccine into the body. As explained in the department – in order to consolidate the effect and form a more stable immunity.

Epidemiologist Alexander Gorelov told RIA Novosti that after the first vaccination, antibodies begin to be produced and humoral immunity is formed. Laboratory studies show the presence of IgM and IgG immunoglobulins in the body. But protection from SARS-CoV-2 in this case is unstable and short-term (2-3 months). And after the second dose of the vaccine, T-cell immunity is formed. “The so-called memory cells provide reliable protection against infection,” Gorelov added.

The expert recalled that the introduction of several doses of the drug is a common practice. For example, three injections are needed to protect against hepatitis B, and two injections against tick-borne encephalitis.
