EU-27 grant Ukraine and Moldova EU candidate status

This long-awaited decision by Kyiv, taken at a summit of EU heads of state and government in Brussels, marks the start of a long and complex process towards membership.

The leaders of the Twenty-Seven recognized on Thursday Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidate for the European Union, announced the President of the European Council Charles Michel, referring to a “historical moment“, in full Russian offensive.

This long-awaited decision by Kyiv, taken at a summit of EU heads of state and government in Brussels, marks the start of a long and complex process towards membership. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky greeted “a unique and historic moment”.

Earlier in the day, the head of the Ukrainian presidential administration Andriï Yermak, had indicated that “The objective” was “clair»: «full membership of the EU”, even if this procedure can take years, he added. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama had, however, advised Ukrainians not to “no illusions” on the process. “North Macedonia has been a candidate for 17 years, if I haven’t lost count, and Albania for eight years, so welcome to Ukraine”he had quipped.
