FBI achieves historic Bitcoin breakthrough

US officials said Monday that an operation led by the FBI division in San Francisco recovered $2.3 million, or 63.7 bitcoin, from a ransom paid by Colonial Pipeline after its systems were infected with ransomware.

It was reported that the total ransom was 75 bitcoins, then it was estimated to be worth about 4.4 million dollars, which means that the majority of the funds, but not all were recovered. Under a court order, they note that the FBI obtained the private encryption key, similar to a password, used to transfer funds from the digital wallet.

“Following the money remains one of the simplest tools we have, but it is powerful,” Deputy Attorney General Lisa O Monaco said in a statement. Neither the official statement nor public court records explain how the FBI obtained the key.
