Veteran striker Goran Pandev, the top scorer in the history of the North Macedonia national team, announced his retirement on Thursday after a two-decade career with various clubs in Europe.
“I look back and it still doesn’t feel real to me. It’s been an amazing journey,” Pandev, 39, wrote on Instagram. “A beautiful chapter ends. I take with me an incredible baggage full of emotions”, he added.
discovered by Inter Milan when he was just 18 years old, Pandev played most of his career in Italy, with stints in Lazio, NapoliGenoa and Parma, last season, for Serie B. In Turkey, he played for Galatasaray.
He was part of the historic Inter Milan that won the treble in 2010, winning the Champions Leagueo Italian Championship and the Coppa Italia, led by Portuguese coach José Mourinho.
An idol in his country, Pandev is the player who has played the most games for North Macedonia, with 122 appearances, and who has scored the most goals, 38. In addition, he was the captain of the team that participated in the European Championship 2020, the first tournament played by this team, after scoring the winning goal against Georgia in the playoffs.
