French President Emmanuel Macron says European nations must make themselves respected – in his first public comments since AUKUS was unveiled and Australia’s $90 billion submarine deal with France was torn up.
He also insisted Europe must stop being naïve and show it has the capacity and power to defend itself.
It comes as France and Greece announced a joint defence deal worth $4.8 billon.
Through the partnership Athens will purchase three French warships, to be built by Naval Group – the same company which was contracted to build Australia’s submarines.
The vessels will be used by Greece as part of a strategy to boost its defence capabilities in eastern parts of the Mediterranean.
