Germany: Get behind the wheel after a cup of mulled wine

Mulled wine, popular in the cold season, can quickly get hopped. How fast – a special formula shows.

Using this formula and taking into account the gender and weight of the person, you can calculate the blood alcohol level after a cup of mulled wine. Women tend to have higher blood alcohol levels, according to This is due to the fact that men have a higher proportion of fluid in the body (68%) than women (55%). The so-called Widmark formula calculates the level per mille based on the volume of alcohol consumed in grams, divided by body weight in kilograms and multiplied by 0.68 or 0.55 depending on gender.

Mulled wine is a mixture of wine, spices and sugar. It usually contains between 8.8 and 13.1% alcohol. According to the German Nutrition Society, a cup of mulled wine (250 ml) contains 18 grams of pure alcohol. For a comparative calculation, let’s take a man and a woman with the same weight of 70 kg. For a woman, the calculation is as follows: 18 / (70×0.55) = 0.46 ppm. Formula for men: 18 / (70×0.68) = 0.37 ppm.

It is not recommended to get behind the wheel of a car in both cases. Despite the fact that in Germany the blood alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 ppm, in the event of an accident, the driver is threatened with consequences even if the value of 0.3 ppm is exceeded.
