Germany: No sharp improvement in consumer sentiment expected

The incidence rate in all federal states of Germany fell below 35 infected per 100,000 inhabitants per week. Steps to exit the quarantine led to some improvement in consumer sentiment in the country in June this year, as shown by the “consumption barometer” of the trade association HDE.

The reason for the somewhat more positive sentiment lies primarily in improving consumer expectations, who are optimistic about the progress in the vaccination campaign and the removal of many restrictive measures. “Due to the restrictions imposed on trade, gastronomy and tourism, the desire to consume in recent months has been opposed by a lack of opportunities for consumption,” explained the HDE spokesman.

At the moment, stores in most regions of the country are reopened, subject to all established rules. However, experts do not note optimism about the growth of consumer sentiment.

“In the course of further steps to exit the quarantine, it can be assumed that there will be an increase in private consumption, but a sharp increase in consumption should not be expected.”
