After two nights of arson attacks in Manaus, the federal government authorized the support of the National Security Force to contain the wave of violence in the city. The announcement was made by the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Anderson Torres.
“At the request of the governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima, and aiming to help restore peace and order in the state capital, I have just authorized the use of the National Force in Manaus,” he said in a statement released on social networks.
According to the minister, the planning of the National Force’s actions is carried out by Senasp (National Public Security Secretariat).
The arson attacks would be a reaction of a criminal faction to the murder of a drug trafficking leader by the Military Police.
Between Sunday (6) and this Monday (7), the police arrested 31 suspects of involvement in depredations and fires in buses, cars, public buildings, bank agencies and police vehicles.
Amazonas Governor Wilson Lima (PSC) thanked the Minister of Justice and Public Security and President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) for the decision to send the National Force to Manaus.
“All of our security forces are on the streets and we’ve set up more than 40 checkpoints to ensure the population’s safety,” he said of the latest attempts to contain the attacks.
The climate of tension and fear turned the capital this Monday into a ghost town for most of the day. Public services were suspended for security reasons, public and private schools did not open and the public transport bus fleet circulated only partially.
Part of the traders in the Manaus malls anticipated the closing of the stores and the unions of the Metallurgical, Mechanical and Electrical Material Industries of Manaus and Metallurgist recommended the suspension of the third shift of the factories.
The city of Manaus decided to keep the municipal schools closed on Tuesday (8). Classes will be held only on the remote system, as a precaution. The administrative activities of the city will also work only in online format.
The public transport bus fleet should circulate normally on Tuesday, as long as there are no more arson attacks.
