The delegation of Guild landed on Wednesday night in the city of Asunción, capital of Paraguay, to dispute the game against Independiente del Valle, for the third phase of the Libertadores – one before the group stage of the competition. The squad from Rio Grande do Sul is quite lacking for Friday’s game at the traditional Defensores del Chaco stadium.
Four players from the Rio Grande do Sul team embarked back to Brazil. Vanderson and Paulo Victor tested positive for covid-19, while Victor Ferraz and Emanuel had symptoms related to the disease, such as muscle pain, headache and sore throat. The pair tested negative for the virus. The athletes took a chartered flight to return to Porto Alegre.

The Grêmio delegation was already without its commander. The coach Renato Gaúcho was another one to test positive for covid-19 and did not even leave the capital of Rio Grande do Sul for the commitment of Libertadores.
Initially, the confrontation between Grêmio and Del Valle was planned for the city of Quito, in Ecuador. However, due to problems with covid-19, the Brazilian team was prevented from training on the spot and would probably not be allowed to play on Ecuadorian soil.
