Five years after their memorable extra-time triumph over hosts France, Portugal finally begin their European Championship title defence this evening.
Fernando Santos’ side are at Budapest’s Puskas Arena for their Euro 2020 Group F opener and will be expected to make a strong start to the tournament against underdogs Hungary.
Portugal insist that the extra burden of expectation as holders with a talented squad spearheaded by Cristiano Ronaldo will not weigh them down as they also compete with fellow European powerhouses France and Germany in the so-called ‘Group of Death’.
But they could still face a tricky test against a Hungary team that will have no pressure on them at all, with most not giving them even a slight hope of reaching the knockout stages.
The Hungarians are competing at the Euros for only the second time since 1972, though they did reach the last 16 last time around, drawing 3-3 with Portugal in a thrilling contest en route to a heavy defeat by Belgium.

Half time | Hungary 0-0 Portugal
Hungary survive until half-time. Portugal have dominated the first half but they have been unable to first a breakthrough. Ronaldo still can’t believe he missed that chance at the end of the half. A frustrating first 45 minutes for the holders.
Huge chance for Ronaldo!
43 mins: Oh, how has he missed that? That was a sitter.
A cross into the box from Fernades reaches Ronaldo six yards out in the middle of the goal with only Gulacsi to beat. Someone he shanks his effort over the bar. He can’t believe he’s missed that. That’s a huge let-off for Hungary.
40 mins: A big save from Gulacsi! Jota does well to turn and swivel inside the area but his left-foot shot goes straight at Gulacsi and the Hungary goalkeeper saves with his legs. Good play from Semedo down the right there to set up Jota.
38 mins: Almost 40 minutes on the clock and we have our first yellow card of the evening. It goes to Manchester City defender Dias for a robust challenge. It looked like he got a touch on the ball. His foot was a bit high but that looked a bit harsh.
37 mins: A good cross into the area and Szalai flicks a header goalwards but it is straight at Patricio. A comfortable save for the Wolves goalkeeper
36 mins: Having soaked up all the Portugal pressure, Szalai wins a free kick after a mazy run in the Portugal half. A good crossing opportunity for the hosts.
34 mins: Ouch! Jota has just booted the ball straight into the face of Lovrencsics from point-blank range. That looked like it hurt but the Hungary man is ok. Portugal back in possession…
It has been a frustrating 33 minutes for Portugal and this man…
31 mins: The question for Hungary is whether they can do more when they do have the ball. So far, Patricio has been a spectator in the Portugal goal
