‘I hope you die’: GOP rep plays threatening voicemail he received after voting for Biden infrastructure bill

A Republican lawmaker recently shared details about the disturbing voicemail he received after voting in favor of President Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill.

On Monday, November 8, Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) appeared on CNN’s “AC360” for an interview with Anderson Cooper. During the segment, Upton shared his reaction to the disturbing call which he described as “frightening.”

“I’ll tell you it’s a terrible way — we have seen civility really downslide here, Upton said. “I’m concerned about my staff. They are taking these calls.” He added, “These are very disturbing, adult language. To say the least, that truly is frightening.”

The Michigan lawmaker also played the threatening voicemail which featured the caller saying, “I hope you die. I hope everybody in your fucking family dies,” while calling him a “fucking piece of shit traitor.”

Upton on Friday joined 13 other Republican lawmakers who voted with Democrats to pass the $1.2 trillion infrastructure package. According to CNN, the piece of legislation, which was passed by Senate lawmakers back in August of this year, “will deliver $550 billion in new federal investments in America’s infrastructure over five years, including roads, bridges, mass transit, rail, airports, ports and waterways.”

After the vote on Friday, Upton tweeted, “I regret that this good, bipartisan bill became a political football in recent weeks. Our country can’t afford this partisan dysfunction any longer.”

Upton’s support of the infrastructure plan comes several months after he also voted in support of former President Donald Trump’s impeachment. During a previous appearance on CNN, he weighed in on the Capitol insurrection as he spoke CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.”

“It’s absolutely bogus,” Upton said in May. “You know, I was there. I watched a number of the folks walk down to the White House and then back. I have a balcony on my office. So I saw them go down. I heard the noise — the flash-bangs, I smelled some of the gas as it moved my way.”
