The initiative to distribute to everyone who received the coronavirus vaccine three days off with the preservation of wages caused a wide public outcry. According to the idea of the authors of the idea, the Institute for Social Research and Civil Initiatives Development (ISIRGI), this will increase interest in vaccination. We asked the doctor how justified such a measure is from a medical point of view.
In anticipation of a new rise in the incidence, which experts predict in October, it is important that as many people as possible protect themselves from the disease. In countries where mass vaccination was carried out, mortality has already decreased by orders of magnitude. And yet in Russia the process is stalled.
Now the authorities are looking for new ways to reward those who are vaccinated. In a number of regions, prizes are raffled, somewhere they give packages of eggs. The proposal for three free weekends for the vaccinated, according to ISIRGI experts, should increase people’s interest.
Director of ISIRGI Maxim Petunin wrote an appeal to the Ministry of Labor, the Federation Council and the State Duma. Mandatory paid days off (three days after each stage of vaccination, as well as generally after vaccinations in a pandemic), Mr. Petunin proposes to provide not at the expense of the state, but at the expense of employers.
Today, according to the author of the initiative, many refuse to vaccinate only because in the event of adverse events after the introduction of the vaccine, they will have to apply for a sick leave, because the management will not give paid time off. Therefore, “a huge layer of the working-age population remains unprotected from coronavirus infection.” And, if you oblige employers to pay all vaccinated days off, things will get better. “Without a doubt, the legislatively enshrined additional days off after vaccination could significantly increase the number of vaccinated, which in turn will contribute to an increase in herd immunity,” the ISIRGI believes. At the same time, it is proposed to extend this practice to generally all vaccinations that are carried out in a pandemic.
— My daughter is a doctor, she is 33 years old, the night after vaccination her temperature rose to 39, the next morning she felt very bad, but I had to go to work, they do not give time off, there is no one to work, — tells the Muscovite Elena Sergeevna.
Such stories are not uncommon today. If you read the chats of the vaccinated, many people react to the vaccine with fever, chills, aching joints, tachycardia, and high blood pressure. In the vast majority of cases, side effects disappear within a day, on average they last up to three days. However, employers do not always get into the position of being vaccinated and sometimes literally force them to go to work immediately after the injection.
However, the law, even without innovations, is on the side of citizens – in case of illness, they can always take sick leave.
As the immunologist, director of the contract research company Nikolai Kryuchkov told MK, early undesirable side effects after vaccination are rather frequent, in the form of at least one symptom they can occur in up to 50% of vaccinated: “Most often they just last 1-3 days , therefore, from this point of view, it is quite reasonable to give the vaccinated days off. And yet, this is not the goal: when undesirable effects appear, you can always issue a sick leave.
The more important point is to further stimulate interest in vaccination, that is, people have the opportunity to get three days of rest, even if they underwent vaccination without problems. “
— There are situations when adverse events after vaccination last more than three days. What then?
— Then it remains only to take sick leave. This is extremely rare, but it does happen. Vaccines are reactogenic, and not everyone tolerates them well.
— Are there any examples of days off after some other vaccine?
— I don’t remember that. Even in the case of the administration of live attenuated vaccines, which often cause side effects, there is no weekend. So this initiative is useful for ensuring mass vaccination.
