Voting has begun in Karelia on joining the territories of the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics and the two former Ukrainian Kherson and Zaporozhye regions to Russia. Voting will last five days and end on September 27th.
Not only residents living in the liberated territories will vote, but refugees who have left for Russia during the hostilities also have the right to vote. There are about two thousand of them in Karelia. According to the republican election commission, four Donetsk-Ukrainian election commissions have been formed. They included refugees temporarily residing in the region. The Central Election Commission of Karelia provides logistical and consulting assistance to the organizers of the referendum. 19 places for voting have been determined, members of the commission will go to places of compact residence.
– This is a long-awaited event. We have repeatedly helped our colleagues from the public chambers of the LPR and DPR to work with civil activists and collect humanitarian aid. Members of the Public Chamber of Karelia traveled to the Donbass, were at the scene, told us firsthand how difficult the circumstances were there. The issue is so urgent that we cannot help but support the referenda, – noted Lyubov Kulakova, chairman of the Public Chamber of Karelia.
