The Primorsky Regional Court replaced the suspended sentence with a real one during the review of the case of a driver convicted of violating the traffic rules, according to the website of the regional prosecutor’s office.
In October 2018, a truck driver, knowing that he was carrying 53 tons of potatoes, drove onto a bridge over the Osinovka River, ignoring a sign limiting the maximum permissible weight to 20 tons. As the car passed over the bridge, the flight collapsed, the truck rolled back and crushed a passenger car that followed. The woman who was in it and her three-year-old daughter died on the spot.
The district court sentenced the culprit to four years of suspended imprisonment with a probationary period of three years. The verdict was appealed in the regional court by the prosecutor’s office as too lenient.
Now the man will spend four years in a penal colony. The arguments of the appeal of the defense were dismissed, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
