In the Trans-Baikal Territory, a criminal case was initiated on timber smuggling (part 3 of article 226.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). A local resident and a Chinese citizen became his defendants.
According to the investigation, the accomplices from 2009 to 2015 exported over 190 thousand cubic meters of timber worth more than 600 million rubles. They legalized illegally mined timber by setting up bogus legal entities and using fake documents.
“Within the framework of foreign economic contracts with various Chinese firms, documents prepared on behalf of front companies were submitted to the Chita customs for declaring and moving timber to the PRC,” the East Siberian Transport Prosecutor’s Office reports.
Both defendants were detained and imprisoned by a court decision.
