The Federal Police found that Jair Bolsonaro’s allies and aides financed protests calling for the closure of Congress, organized an extremist group that attacked the STF, and spread misleading information to target the president’s opponents.
The actions were documented in a 1,000-page report on the inquiry into undemocratic acts. The Attorney General’s Office, however, did not see much. Five months after receiving the paperwork, Augusto Aras’ team asked for the filing of investigations against politicians and people with special jurisdiction.
The prosecutors did not want to see, but the investigation showed that pocketnarismo installed a coup gang inside the public machine. Messages obtained by police officers indicate, for example, that an adviser to Deputy Bia Kicis (PSL-DF) helped organize a camp of radical activists who used torches and masks to intimidate the STF last year.
Documents also point out that a third-party employee of the Ministry of Human Rights financed the rental of sound cars for a protest outside the army’s headquarters in April 2020. Renan Sena also bought banners that called for military intervention. Bolsonaro participated in that demonstration and spoke in the back of a pickup truck.
The PF also described an operation orchestrated on social media to attack institutions and political rivals. The data collected in the investigation suggest that the administration of pro-Bolsonaro pages was carried out within the Planalto and even in its condominium in Barra da Tijuca. The person responsible for most of the accesses was a direct advisor to the president.
The investigation showed how the group that supports Bolsonaro’s attacks against the limits of democracy works. The PF should use the material to map the disclosure of false information about electronic voting machines and the attempt to undermine the next election. The scammers are still in power.
