Luca Morici, who headed the social media team of Italian right-wing League leader Matteo Salvini, is under investigation, on charges of drug possession and sale.
Verona’s public prosecutor, Angela Barbaglio, said Morrissey’s name had been “included in the register of persons under investigation on charges of transporting a narcotic substance”.
For his part, Morrissey confirmed in a statement published by the party that he did not commit any crime, but he apologized to Salvini, the party, his family and colleagues for his “weakness and mistakes,” adding: “It is a very painful moment in my life and reveals unresolved existential weaknesses that I need to devote all the time that I I can dedicate it to her in the near future.”
It was announced last week that Morrissey had resigned from his party position, due to family reasons.
Italian media reported that the investigation began in mid-August, after three young men claimed that the drugs found by the police in their car had been supplied by Morrissey.
A small amount of the drug was also found on a farm owned by Morrissey.
