Kiev has not received any guarantees in case of launch of “Nord Stream 2”

Ukraine has not received any guarantees in the event of the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This was stated on Thursday by the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishina, commenting on the statement made by the FRG and the United States on the agreement on Nord Stream 2, voiced the day before.

“Ukraine has not received any guarantees: neither in this statement, nor outside it,” she said on the air of Ukraine-24. The initiatives contained in the statement of the FRG and the United States, according to Stefanishina, “are not new.” “It talks about support for the Trimorya initiative, which already exists, and which Ukraine is trying to join, so the content of this proposal is not clear. Additional financial support and the creation of a green transformation fund have been announced, about which Ukraine has been negotiating for about three years,” she noted.

The Deputy Prime Minister also expressed regret that the statement on Nord Stream 2 does not contain any security guarantees for Ukraine, including regarding NATO membership.

According to Stefanishina, Kiev would be satisfied with a statement that would provide for a package of energy solutions, guarantees for the preservation of transit and the continuation of the contract for the transportation of gas through the territory of Ukraine, as well as guarantees of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.

On Wednesday, the US and Germany reached an agreement on the Nord Stream 2 project. In particular, Washington acknowledged that sanctions would not stop its implementation, and Berlin pledged to seek an extension of the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine. US President Joe Biden said that Nord Stream 2 is 99% complete and it is impossible to stop its construction. At the same time, the American authorities reserved the right to take action in response to “Russia’s use of energy as a geopolitical weapon in Europe” and “aggression against Ukraine,” the State Department said.

The Russian side has repeatedly stated that it has never used energy resources as an instrument of pressure.
