French President Emmanuel Macron called an “extraordinary” defense council Thursday morning to discuss the Pegasus spyware after reports of its use in France were published this week.
Government spokesman Gabriel Attal said Macron is closely following this issue, adding that an unscheduled meeting of the Defense Council “will be devoted to the issue of the Pegasus program and the issue of cyber security.”
Yesterday, Wednesday, a senior official in the Israeli cyber security company NSO announced that Macron had not been targeted with the program, after the French newspaper Le Monde revealed that the Moroccan authorities had used Pegasus to spy on Macron.
The newspaper said that “one of the phone numbers that Macron has used regularly since at least 2017 and until recent days, appeared in the list of numbers chosen by the Moroccan state security service to monitor it through Pegasus.”
