Macron evades Zelensky’s call for help

ANALYSIS – The French President has postponed the debate on Ukrainian state membership to the next NATO summit.

It’s a meeting swollen by events, which obviously caused some embarrassment in Paris. Long planned to take stock of the stuck peace process in eastern Ukraine – known as “Normandy” – the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the Elysee Palace has taken on an unexpected scale with the mobilization of forces. Russians on the Ukrainian border, which raises fears of a new military intervention by the Kremlin.

The meeting between the two presidents was, according to a source familiar with the matter, “Friendly and warm”. But on the support Zelensky expected for Ukraine’s NATO candidacy, Macron made no promises. He shifted the subject by postponing it to the next Alliance summit.

The renewal of the Russian military threat as well as the ceasefire violations prompted Volodymyr Zelensky to arrive in Paris with what he considers a “Top priority”.
