Cops are investigating the murder of a registered sex offender who was a patient at a Brooklyn psychiatric center, police said Friday.
Ex-con Shakim Devega, 28, was found unconscious inside the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center on Clarkson Ave. in Prospect Lefferts Gardens at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday.
EMS rushed him to Kings County Hospital, but he could not be saved.
Devega died from “sustained trauma to the neck and neck area,” police said. The city Medical Examiner’s office was still investigating how Devega died, an agency spokeswoman said.
No arrests have been made.
In 2015, Devega was sentenced to a year in prison on an attempted robbery conviction. He was released in 2016, but was arrested two years later for sexually abusing a 6-year-old boy, police said. He was convicted of attempted sexual abuse in the first degree in 2019 and was released last year after serving two years in prison, according to court records.
After his release, his name was added to the state’s sex offender registry and he was moved to the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center.
It was not immediately clear if his criminal past played a role in his murder. No motive for Devega’s killing was immediately released.
Detectives were checking surveillance footage inside the psychiatric center Friday in an attempt to determine where and when he was attacked.
