Victoria Acting Premier James Merlino denies there has been a failure of hotel quarantine after it was found a returned traveller who stayed in two hotels is linked to the West Melbourne Delta cluster.
Mr Merlino said the government has done its best to manage the hotel quarantine system despite the facilities being “built for tourists” and not to “tackle infectious disease”.
“We do our absolute best in hotel quarantine – strict IPC controls, PPE, testing of staff, the ventilation assessment,” he said.
He said the situation has always called for a “national purpose-built system” to deal with returning travellers.
“What we absolutely need and we needed it a year ago, are purpose-built facilities for our highest risk individuals.”
