A 28-year-old woman is accused of leaving her two-month-old child at a drug trafficking point as a guarantee for the payment of a debt in Pontes e Lacerda, a city of 45,000 inhabitants located 487 km from Cuiabá, in Mato Grosso.
According to information from the police, the mother is a drug user and left the child at the place as a “pledge” for the traffickers to whom she owed money.
The baby’s abandonment was anonymously reported to the city’s Guardianship Council. Counselors went to the trafficking point accompanied by military police and rescued the child.
According to statements made by police officer Sandro Barbosa to RedeTV!, the mother was seen entering the trafficking point with the child and then leaving alone, which aroused the suspicion of those who witnessed the scene.
The baby would have spent a few days in the company of two women at the traffic point. After being rescued, the child was taken to a shelter in the city. The mother was not located by the police. She has also been arrested for trafficking.
The woman who reportedly abandoned her son has a history of drug use and has already lost custody of four other children. Even before the rescue, which took place on Tuesday (8), she had also temporarily lost custody of the two-month-old baby, alleging negligent behavior.
Two other children of hers were put up for adoption and a third died at the age of two.
