New controversy over masks in Germany

Defective equipment ordered in China by the Ministry of Health has been sold to the disabled and homeless.

For the second time in his term, German Health Minister Jens Spahn is embroiled in a mask affair. Last March, the former rising star of the CDU was accused of favoritism for having bought hundreds of thousands of masks by a company that hired her husband as a lobbyist. This time the Spiegel – at the origin of the revelations in both cases – affirms that his ministry acquired in China, in the spring of 2020, a stock of defective masks for a sum greater than 1 billion euros. Rather than sending them back to their recipient or throwing them in the incinerator, the institution sought to sell them to people with disabilities, the unemployed and the homeless. The distribution campaign did not go well and the minister remained, at the end of April 2021, with 301 million copies on his hands.

Apart from his own camp – that of Angela Merkel – Jens Spahn, who accumulates missteps, can no longer find anyone to defend him.
