‘Party ships full of booze’ to be drafted in for 6,000 fans at Qatar 2022 – World News

The emir of the middle eastern country, which is dry to Muslims, is said to have tripled the number of bars open to foreign visitors ahead of the tournament

The tournament will take place next year

Foreign football fans set to descend on Qatar for the 2022 World Cup have been promised a celebrity-filled extravaganza with party ships drafted in to keep the booze flowing.

The emir of the middle eastern country, which is dry to Muslims, is said to have tripled the number of bars open to foreign visitors ahead of the tournament.

And according to reports Doha is in discussion with stars, from Abba to Lady Gaga and Aerosmith, to perform at the major sporting event to be held next year.

The football tournament is set to be held in November 2022 and has already attracted criticism and protests over workers’ rights from players, including from Norway, Holland and Germany.

The controversy around the tournament cast a shadow but the organisers insist they want to change perceptions.

“Fans will experience the warmth of our hospitality and, due to the compact nature of the tournament, they’ll be able to watch two games a day in the group stages,” Nasser Al-Khater, chief executive of the cup, previously said.

“All eight of our stunning stadiums are either ready or very close to being fully operational and we’re busy finalising our plans for a spectacular festival of football.”

Now, The Times reports that a new port will be home to two cruise ships which will be capable of housing up to 6,000 fans, and doubling up as ‘party boats’ for sports fans.

Air-conditioned canvas tents replete with king-sized beds are also said to be on offer.

Berthold Trenkel, of Qatar Tourism, said: “We really wanted fans to feel they’re in Qatar and to have a sense of the local culture so the desert had to be a big part of that.

“Of course we had to make it comfortable as well as fun so the glamping will really add a unique element for fans to experience.”

And security is said to be a priority, with a security source reportedly saying: “It’s been really important to make sure that we are prepared as we want to make sure that people feel safe and welcome when they come to Qatar.

“We are a small, safe country with a small population and making sure that we avoid incidents like the Euro finals [at Wembley] is imperative.

“So making sure that there are plenty of fan zones and activities spread around the city to keep crowds dispersed was a key component in the strategy.”
