The new Porsche Cayenne announces its arrival as king of the Nurburgring among SUVs. The next performance model in the Cayenne range set a new record on the historic German circuit by making the Nordschleife’s 20.832 in 7m38.925s.
The time on the official Nurburgring GmbH standings was certified by a notary and now represents a new record in the ‘SUV, off-road vehicle, van, pick-up’ category dethroning the Audi RS Q8 by more than 3 seconds – the previous record was of 7m42.253s.
“This Cayenne has a top performance. During its development, we focused on the exceptional performance on the road. Our record-breaking Cayenne is based on the Cayenne Turbo Coupé, albeit more designed for maximum lateral and longitudinal acceleration”, said Cayenne’s vice president of product line, Stefan Weckbach.
The notary has also confirmed the status of series production vehicle for this camouflaged Cayenne, which will make its debut ia world soon. Also somewhat camouflaged and before the attack on the Nurburgring record, Porsche had already shown the new Cayenne Turbo Coupé in tests with one of its most famous ambassadors at the wheel.
The new Inferno Verde record for SUVs was set on the morning of June 14th with an outdoor ambient temperature of 23 degrees Celsius and 46 Celsius on the track. At the wheel was test driver Lars Kern.
“The high precision steering and the stoically stable rear axle gave me immense confidence in the Hatzenbach section. It changed direction at the speed of light in fast corners such as between Hohe Acht and Eiskurve, unadorned and no tendency to overturn. Even in the technical sections, the Cayenne is a true sports car and easy to control.”
“Usually the wheels lose contact with the asphalt in the Pflanzgarten I and II sections, but the Cayenne has made these areas smooth and calm. There is plenty of travel for the suspension and the bodywork remains solid and controlled . The powertrain makes a really strong impression. It delivers power in all situations, as well as perfect gear shifts.”
To protect the pilot, the Cayenne which broke the record was equipped with a competition bench and a safety cell. The performance tires used for the record lap were the Pirelli P Zero Corsa mounted on 22” wheels and were specially developed for the new Cayenne model as part of the standard equipment.
