The possibility of installing reduced and other non-standard road signs in Russia will be excluded by the decision of Rosstandart. The department made a decision to cancel the GOST, which entered into force on May 1, 2019, which allows the installation of such signs.
According to the newspaper “Kommersant” with reference to the minutes of the Rosstandart commission, the decision was made to cancel GOST 58398-2019 “Experimental technical means of organizing traffic” on the basis of a complaint from the Scientific Center for Road Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. As pointed out by the representatives of the center, the canceled GOST is contrary to the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals 1968. The international document, in particular, does not provide for a right turn to a red light. In addition, the controversial GOST duplicates other GOSTs, which already allow the installation of experimental signs.
At the same time, the provisions of the canceled GOST will be transferred to other standards.
According to this GOST, it was allowed to install reduced-size road signs in Russian cities. If the standard sign has a size of 60 cm by 60 cm, and the smallest is 50 cm by 50 cm, then, according to the new GOST, signs measuring 40 cm by 40 cm and 35 cm by 35 cm were introduced experimentally. Cities were chosen for the experiment. Moscow, St. Petersburg, Saratov, Vladimir and Kaliningrad.
