Several fires erupted in the outskirts of Jerusalem Wednesday, prompting authorities to evacuate residents of several villages, as dozens of Israeli firefighters and ten helicopters tried to control the flames.
The police stated that the highway linking Jerusalem and Tel Aviv was closed, as well as the train line linking the two cities.
It was not immediately known the cause of the fires, which spread in woods near densely populated areas, while plumes of black smoke rose in the sky over the hills bordering Jerusalem.
The police said that the villages of Ma’aleh Hashimha and Yad Hashmona on the western outskirts of Jerusalem were evacuated.
Clips published by Israeli television stations showed the flames rising in intensity in the area.
