Municipalities have created rules for the distribution of the so-called xepa vaccine against Covid-19, with the application of doses that are left in the already opened vials of immunizing agents at the end of the day.
The measure helps to avoid waste, since the substances have an expiration date after opening the containers, which can contain more than one dose. Currently, three different vaccines are applied in the country (CoronaVac, AstraZeneca/Oxford and Pfizer/BioNTech), and each one of them can be out of the refrigerator for a different time, ranging from 6 hours to 48 hours.
See below who can sign up to receive the remaining doses and what is needed to get in line in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
Who can take it?
Sao Paulo People with permanent disabilities, who are over 18 years old and live in the territory of the health unit; students from health care courses described in the instruction for prioritizing vaccine doses; people over 50 years old.
Rio de Janeiro Bedridden elderly and people from priority groups listed in the National Immunization Program (PNI) who are at the vaccination site at that time.
How to register?
Sao Paulo You must join the waiting list of the health facility closest to your place of residence.
Rio de Janeiro The family or companion of bedridden people must complete the registration on the city hall’s website or go to the reference unit for their address, which can be consulted on the Where to Be Served page. For the other groups there is no registration.
What do I need to bring?
Sao Paulo Identification document (preferably CPF) and proof of address. For people with permanent disabilities, it is necessary to bring proof of disability, which can be a medical report, free public transport card, documents proving attendance at centers specialized in the care of disabled people, or an identity document that indicates the disability. Eligible students must bring proof of enrollment.
Rio de Janeiro Identity document, CPF number and, if possible, vaccination booklet. In the case of people with comorbidities or permanent disabilities, a report, certificate, medical prescription or other documents that prove the conditions (with QR Code or originals) are required. More detailed information is on the city’s website.
What vaccines are being offered in this schedule?
Sao Paulo Vaccines available at the health facility.
Rio de Janeiro AstraZeneca and Pfizer. In the case of Coronavac, which is currently only being used for the second dose, a vial with ten doses is only opened at the end of the day if there are ten people waiting. Otherwise, the person is told to come back the next day.
Should I go and wait for leftovers of the vaccine in the units?
Sao Paulo Do not. The health unit team communicates by phone at the end of the vaccination schedule and the candidate to receive the immunizing agent must go immediately to the location.
Rio de Janeiro The city says that “there are no leftovers of vaccine” and “does not recommend that people outside the priority groups gather at the doors of the units in search of the so-called ‘xepa'”. “The units work rationally and every care is taken so that the bottles are fully used in the priority groups of the day”, says the Health Department.
