The services sector had a positive performance in April. In comparison with March, the business volume rose 0.7% in the country. Even with the advance, the sector is 1.5% below the pre-pandemic level of February 2020.
The result was released this Friday (11) by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).
Compared to April 2020, the initial phase of the pandemic, there was an increase of 19.8%. In the fourth month of last year, several services collapsed with the initial impacts of the sanitary crisis, which paralyzed the operation of companies.
According to the IBGE, the sector accumulated a low of 5.4% in 12 months until April 2021. In the accumulated result for this year, the segment registered a positive variation of 3.7%.
The provision of services was hit hard by the pandemic because it brings together activities that depend on the circulation of customers. Among them are hotel, bar and restaurant operations.
After collapsing at the beginning of the crisis, the sector experienced a rebound throughout 2020. However, it showed signs of losing steam with the reduction of economic stimuli and the worsening of the health crisis at the start of 2021.
According to experts, the advance of vaccination against Covid-19 is essential to reduce restrictions on activities and ensure greater consumer confidence. Right now, unemployment and rising inflation are also challenges for business recovery.
Before disclosing the result of services, the IBGE presented this month the balance of two other sectorial indicators: industrial production and trade sales. Factories had a reduction of 1.3% in April, compared to March. The retail registered high of 1.8%.
