Russia is Switzerland’s most important partner, and the country has enormous potential. This was announced on Wednesday, June 17, by the Swiss President Guy Parmelin during his press conference following the meeting of the Presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden.
He also noted that Geneva is engaged in supporting communication and business channels with the Russian side, touching upon such important areas as economics, finance, science and energy. Parmelen shared that during the talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project was raised.
He pointed out that Switzerland has been one of the largest investors in Russia for a long time. Disclosing the details of the negotiations with the head of the Kremlin, Parmelen noted that they discussed the possibilities of optimal support for Swiss enterprises in the fields of the Russian market and the same process in the opposite direction – domestic enterprises in the Swiss market.

During the negotiations between Parmelen and Putin, such points as the topic of the nuclear deal with Iran, as well as the problems of the spread of the coronavirus, were raised. In turn, Putin thanked the President of Switzerland for the fact that his country has provided a “wonderful platform” for the Russian-American summit. According to him, “Geneva is always hospitable”.
The Russian leader’s meeting with Parmelen took place after Putin’s summit with US President Joe Biden. First, the heads of the Russian Federation and the United States held talks in a narrow format, they lasted half an hour longer than the 1 hour and 15 minutes planned by the protocol. After that, an expanded meeting between the delegations of Russia and the United States took place.
Following the talks, the leaders adopted a joint statement on strategic stability. The parties also agreed on the return of the ambassadors of the two countries and the continuation of consultations on the further fate of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START-3).
Commenting on the negotiations, Joe Biden noted that they were held in a kind and positive atmosphere, and also expressed the hope that the United States has created the foundation for further relations with Russia. Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Russian president, said the talks were in line with Moscow’s expectations.
Vladimir Putin also noted that the talks were held “in the same language.” According to him, politicians have expressed a desire to bring positions closer together. On the whole, the Russian leader assesses the past meeting positively. The President said that during the summit, he and Biden discussed the topic of strategic stability, trade relations, regional security and cybersecurity.
The meeting between Putin and Biden took place on June 16 at the Villa La Grange in Geneva. First, the presidents held talks in a narrow format, they lasted half an hour longer than the 1 hour and 15 minutes planned by the protocol. After that, an expanded meeting between the delegations of Russia and the United States took place. In general, taking into account the break, the summit took about three and a half hours.
