Taylor Swift chaos triggers US Senate hearing

Several thousand Swift fans were left disappointed – and ticketless – back when Ticketmaster’s systems crashed last Thursday. The problem already arose during the pre-sale, where millions of fans tried to secure tickets for the upcoming Eras tour.

The open sale was scheduled to start the next day, but Ticketmaster ended up canceling the sale citing “insufficient ticket stock” and “extraordinarily high demand”.

– Does not work

Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar says the chaos makes it abundantly clear that that ticket market isn’t working well enough. Now she and her Republican colleague Mike Lee are planning a hearing before the Senate Committee on Competition and Consumer Affairs.

– Last week, the problems in the ticket market became painfully clear when Ticketmaster failed hundreds of thousands of fans hoping to buy concert tickets. The high fees, online problems and cancellations customers experienced show how Ticketmaster’s dominant market position means that the company is not under pressure to drive continuous innovation and improvement, says Klobuchar.

– That is why we will hold a hearing to see how customers and artists are affected by the lack of competition, she says.

– Cursed

Taylor Swift herself has expressed frustration and anger that her fans spent hours trying to get tickets. She says Ticketmaster had assured her several times that they could handle the demand.

– It is fantastic that 2.4 million people got tickets, but I am cursed when many people say that they feel as if they had survived several bear attacks on the road, she says on Instagram.
