São Paulo should once again have a defensive line composed of four athletes, two full-backs and two defenders, in the duel against Fortaleza, this Wednesday, at 21:30 (GMT), at Castelão, for the 31st round of the Brazilian Championship.
As Arboleda was called up to defend the Ecuadorian team in the South American qualifiers for the World Cup, coach Rogério Ceni will have to resort to Miranda and Léo to try to overcome Leão do Pici, who is fighting for a direct spot for the next edition of the Libertadores .
Arboleda’s absence came at a good time for Léo. The full-back/defender has been gaining points with a good part of the São Paulo fans thanks to his recent good performances, but he could end up returning to the bench due to the status of the Ecuadorian defender and Miranda, two pillars of the tricolor defense.
But, despite not being known for systematically using a scheme with three defenders, Rogério Ceni chose to keep the trio in recent games, understanding that Léo had been important for the functioning of São Paulo’s defense.
There is a possibility that Tricolor will continue to insist on the 3-5-2, as Diego Costa and Bruno Alves are the two options for the defense on the bench, but both are not living great times. The second, in fact, has its name aired outside of São Paulo after more than four years.
